1 year ago today Donald told me we were chosen to adopt a baby boy!

Our social worker, Susan, had called and emailed us about 4:30pm on year ago today, advising we were going to adopt a boy set to be induced on April 16th. This sent us into crazy 12 days of waiting, registering, calling our social worker and attorney almost daily, moving items out of our spare bedroom and turning it into a nursery.

I can’t believe it’s been a year!

On another note: Octomom. Everyone at work talks about her and her kids. Well, I think it’s interesting, because if she applied to adopt, I don’t think a social worker would have approved her. No job, living at home with her parents, I can’t see how she would have been approved to adopt 8 children when she already had 7 children already at home. Now, I’m not saying what she did was wrong, but I just want to draw attention to the difference between trying to adopt and having infertility/fertility treatment. For her to have 8 babies naturally, a social worker did not have to be involved, she did not have to disclose how much money she made (other than paying for the treatment), and she did not have to have friends and family write recommendation letters advising that she was a good mother.

Again, I am not saying getting infertility treatments over adoption is wrong. I just am drawing attention to the fact that adoptive parents have to go through a lot more “certification” than parents who chose infertility treatments. I feel badly for the kids, because they don’t care about my opinions or what anyone else thinks; they just want to be fed, and loved, and cared for. I just hope that she is up to the task and there are others in her life that can help support these children.

I also am finding it strange about Madonna trying to adopt a second child from (I cannot remember which African country). Why did they let her adopt her first child from there without staying in the country the mandatory 9-18 months but now they won’t let her adopt a 2nd child? Is it because she is now a single parent?

Jayhawks beat North Carolina!

Hubby’s best friend said last night “I think that since you got the call you’ve been waiting so many years for, this is the year that the Jayhawks are going to win the National Championship! I think it’s a good omen!”

Well, it was fun watching the Jayhawks win on the big screens at Allen Fieldhouse (check out Hubby’s blog, he’s probably got video and all this stuff for you Former Lawrencians that want to get a glimpse of downtown).

I keep looking at our baby registry lists over and over, thinking “That’s really us.” Some people have even bought us some stuff! I’m just a little worried if he comes early how we’re going to get the car seat to take him home if it’s before April 13th, but we’ll figure it out. I have to call our social worker today to see if she has any new news on the birth mom – this is just crazy. 10 days!

Our realtor last night (the realtor that is SELLING our current home) said 1 guy is coming back today for the 3rd time and he’s gone to the bank and planning on putting in an offer. Excitement! The other guy who was buying a house for his grad school son seems to have fizzled out – he’s looking to buy his son a house in the 140,000 range and then lowball offer to 130,000 – which is weird, but oh well, at least we’ve had a lot of showings and a lot of interest in our house this season. We had another “new” person come by yesterday. We just need a contract on our house by May 22nd so we don’t lose our contract on our Gardner house! That’s all I want. I think with baby we’re DEFINITELY hiring movers…..I don’t see any other way to get it done!

Well, I’ll probably be updating here more recently, daily, multiple times a day, letting you know what I know.

I got a great flower bouquet from my parents-in-law and my brother and sister in law (and it was cute my month old nephew was on the card as well!) My hubby got me tickets to see Alicia Keys at the Sprint Center. AWESOME!

Tomorrow our class is going to have a BBQ and some birthday cake (yippee!)

I share my birthday with some famous folks: Dr. Seuss was born on March 2, 1904; Desi Arnaz was born on March 2, 1917; Karen Carpenter was born on March 2, 1950; Jon Bon Jovi was born on March 2, 1962; Bryce Dallas Howard was born on March 2, 1981.

This post is going to sound crazy. First of all, I am praying for every family affected and the friends of those that died. The event of last week have just sparked something that I’ve been thinking about.

We talk about gun control in this country. However, citizens that follow the law and buy guns and carry guns legally usually aren’t the ones that go on a shooting rampage. The ones that go on these shooting rampages do not typically have backgrounds that prevent them from purchasing a gun, so any type of gun control laws do not work.

What if instead of gun control, more of us carried concealed weapons?

If someone was going on a shooting rampage, he would never take his gun to a group of policemen, a group of soilders, etc. Whenever someone goes on a shooting rampage, they attack innocent victims that he/she assumes will not be armed. What if people were never sure who was carrying a weapon and who was not? If more of us carried guns, would these maniacs be more or less likely to walk into a classroom, in a job site, or into someone’s residence?

Just a theory.
